Pest Control 1. Disease: a. Use of resistant varieties. b. Lime-sulphur, bordeaux, elemental sulphur (from mined sources only), as foliar applications only. c. Fungicidal and cryptocidal soaps, plant preparations, vinegar and other natural substances. 2. Insects and similar pests: a. Use of resistant varieties and the provision of conditions favoring natural equilibrium. b. Insecticidal soaps and botanical insecticide such as ryania and sabadilla. c. Rotenone, pyrethrum, dormant oil (preferably vegetable based), and diatomaceous earth may be used with great caution due to their high ecological profile. d. Sexual, visual, and physical traps. e. All pesticides containing aromatic petroleum fractions or synergists (such as piperonyl butoxide) are prohibited. f. Microbial insecticides, as found in the certification material list, are acceptable. g. Microbial insecticides as found in the NSOGA materials list. 3. Weed control: a. Weeds are to be controlled through a combination of cultural practices which limit weed development (rotations, green manure, fallow,etc.). b. Mechanical, electrical, and thermal weeding. c. Microbial weed killers. d. Chemical or petroleum herbicides are prohibited. Amino acid herbicides have not yet been registered for use. e. Plastic mulch is discouraged. If used, it must be removed at the end of the season and used in rotation (not on the same field every year). "Biodegradable" plastics are prohibited. 4. Animal pests: a. All poisons are prohibited. |
